JUNIOR SURF BEGINNER 
BOARD

BEGINNER BOARD PROGRAM

Registrations for this program have closed for the 2020/2021 season. Check in next year to catch this program again.

The beginner Board program will ensure U9 and above Junior surf participants have the necessary skills to enjoyably engage in board-related activities.  This will be achieved by building the foundations for the development of more advanced board skills.

By the end of this program, participants should have increased their confidence around boards and gained the foundation to further develop their board skills.

Requirements:

  • All participants must be planning to or be registered as a current member of  Papamoa’s Junior Surf for the coming season.
  • 8 years of age as of the 1st of October this year
  • Participant must wear their JS rashie and are highly encouraged to wear a wet suit.
  • Participants must have a supervising guardian present at all sessions

200m Badge
In order to make this opportunity accessible, a 200m badger will not be required to attend sessions one or two in the Pool. However, session three and four that will take part in open water are restricted to those with 200m Badges.  200m badge testing is taking place at Bartletts on 17th of October for those wishing to do this.

Cost
Pool only sessions $5 for both
for pool & open water $10 for all 4 sessions

Session One, Prone (Stomach) Paddling, 4th Oct

In order to enjoy board-related activity’s participants must know the basics.

In order to achieve this, we will be kicking the program off at Papamoa Pool on the 4th of Oct, 3-4pm . By starting in a controlled environment, participants are able to build there skills and confidence in a low-risk environment.

Session One will focus on

  • Paddling Prone (stomach)
  • Body positioning
  • Pivoting (turning)
  • Rolling
Session Two, Paddling on Knees, 11th Oct

Building on from session one, participant’s will be introduced to paddling on their knees.

This session will be hosted at Papamoa Pool on the 11th of Oct, 3-4 pm. By remaining in a controlled environment, participants will be able to focus on their balance and get an understanding of paddling on their knees without the challenges the open water brings.

Session Two will focus on

  • Paddling on Knees
  • Body positioning
  • Pivoting (turning)
  • Rolling
Session Three, Open Water Paddling, 18th Oct

Session three will take the skills learnt in the first two sessions and put them to practice in open water.

This session will be hosted at Pilot Bay on the 18th of Oct, 3-4 pm. By moving from Papamoa Pool to Pilot Bay, participants will by able build their confidence and be introduced to the challenges of open water without being put out of there depth. 

Session Three will focus on

  • Paddling on Knees and Stomach in open water. 
  • Body positioning
  • Pivoting (turning)
  • Rolling
Session Four, Paddling in Surf, 25th Oct

Session Four will introduce participants to the final set of skills they need to paddle in the surf.

This session will be hosted at Papamoa Beach on the 25th of Oct, 3-4 pm. Session four will introduce participants to the challenges of paddling in the surf.

  • Popping waves
  • Rolling waves
  • Catching Waves
