Papamoa Lifeguards Off Road Duathlon Series - Event 1 Sunday 20 September 2009 Summerhill Farm
A simply gloriously sunny day welcomed the first ever Papamoa Lifeguards 'Duathlon' to Summerhill.
With stunning views of the Mount as a backdrop, the first Competitors lined up for the long course event. All too soon unfortunately, the appreciation of the views disappeared as the course was eaten up with sweat and toil!
A pretty challenging course was there for all and first home after the 2k run - 10k mtb - 2k run was Ash Hough in a time of 52 minutes 26 seconds .... a new course record!
Ash had recently competed in the Mountain Bike world champs, finishing 49th ... in the world!
So our first ever event had a somewhat 'celebrity' appeal!
The short course event also had it's fair share of decent competitors.
First home was a team made up of Jessica Bitcheno, who had won the under 12's cross country at the recent AIMS Games and Lewis Hart.
Lewis had teamed up with his mum Hayley as the family team "Fast and Furious" in the long course and then with Jessica for the short course MTB section.
He obviously wasn't for talking much after all that biking!
Jessica and Lewis's team effort took all of 21 minutes and 30 seconds!
First individual home in the short course event was Cameron Wells in a time of 26 minutes 33 seconds.
A truly 'family affair award', if we had one, would have gone to Ethan and David Broomhead and Tanya and Brooke Broomhead. The ladies coming in not long after the men of the family!
All in all, a sterling effort by competitors and volunteers alike.
The weather and setting were stunning while the sausage sizzle and coffee van providing fabulous refreshments.
Roll on Event 2 on the 1st of November.
Will our champions be toppled by others??? Let's wait and see!
