Where we have come from:
Details of the main Papamoa Beach being patrolled stretch back to the 1940s. More latterly it was patrolled as part of the Omanu Papamoa SLSC.
Through the 1980s the population of Papamoa East continued to grow such that a group of Omanu Papamoa SLSC lifeguards (who lived at Papamoa), saw the need to have a Junior Surf programme and a dedicated lifeguard service based at Papamoa Domain.
They began working on this proposition resulting in the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club (PSLSC) being established in 1990, in conjunction with Surf Life Saving Bay of Plenty.
In 1986, Stuart Crosby, as President of Papamoa Lions commenced fundraising for the Rescue Base. After much community input the (original part of the) building was completed in 1989.
The foundation member groups of the Trust were (and still are today) Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club, Papamoa Lions Club, Papamoa Guides and Papamoa Scouts.
Due to increasing membership and increasing expectations from the public to provide a wider and more diverse rescue based service, major extensions to the building were completed in 2001.
This trebled the Lifesaving Club gear storage area, added another lounge and provided ladies and men's changing rooms / shower / toilet facilities.
The club has continued to grow and perform in all facets of its operation. |
