Requirements to become a Volunteer Surf Lifeguard:
14 years (Minimum Age)
- Must be a member of a Surf Life Saving Club to commence Lifeguard training
Pass the Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) Award examination comprising of:
- 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes Run / Swim / Run in surf
- Resuscitation Test
- Rescue Test
- Theory questions
- Practical Surf Knowledge test
Once qualified, Lifeguards begin patrolling and are then eligible to use Lifeguard equipment, take part in Surf Sports, attend further courses and use the Club facilities.
16 years
- Attend and pass Senior Lifeguard School Pre-requisite Awards comprising of:
- 800m pool swim in under 14 minutes
- Theory examination
- 1600m beach run / 800m ocean swim
- Resuscitation test
- Emergency Care (Oxygen- NZQA 14470)
- SLNZ Lifeguard Instructor
- BP IRB Operator
17 years
(as per above PLUS ...)
- Emergency Care-Defribrillation (NZQA 14472)
- Emergency Care Extended First Aid (NZQA 14471)
