Welcome to Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club

Our Time ... Your Life!!!

Congratulations to these people who recently achieved or refreshed their 200m Award for the current 2009 season.

What is an Award:

Within Surf Life Saving, an Award is the SLSNZ equivalent of an acknowledgement of achievement.

What is the 200m Safety Award:

The 200m Safety Award is, within the Junior Surf environs, the most significant attainment possible.

It is a mandatory pre-requisite of being eligible to use Board and Ski equipment and has to be re-tested annually.

The Award is not required for using Boogie Boards.

Who may attempt the Award:

The Award is aimed at Junior Surf Members who, via the Junior Surf training program, will be introduced to Board and Ski equipment.

In general, the emphasis is on all Members aged 8 years and upwards however, is not restrictive and remains open to any Junior Surf Member who feels confident in completing the requirements.

Use of Equipment:

The Award is not an automatic qualification of equipment use. This will still be at the discretion of the following PSLSC Members and only after proof of Award attainment by the Member has been confirmed:

  • Initially via the Junior Surf Coach in charge of a particular training session
  • In the Coaches absence, the Junior Surf Coordinator or Director of Junior Surf
  • Where there is no Junior Surf Session, the On-Duty Lifeguard Patrol Captain
  • If no Patrol Captain present, a Senior Lifeguard or Board Member of PSLSC

Final authority rests with the Director of Surf Sports and the Head Coach who may from time to time determine individual items as reserved for specific operational or training requirements.

Legal Requirement:

On an annual basis, PSLSC will provide a controlled venue to complete the Award and a Club Officer as an Examiner for this Award.

Award Requirement:

The total time allocation for this Award is 8 minutes with the swim to be completed within 7 minutes.

As an optional alternative ...

Immediately concluding the 200m swim, Candidates must tread water for one minute and will be required to hold one arm straight up out of water for 30 seconds. The total time allocation for this Award is 10 minutes with the swim to be completed within 9 minutes.

Date and Venue:

For the coming 2010 / 11 season, the 200m Safety Award and refresher will take place at the Papamoa School Pool, Parton Road from 12:30pm - 2:30pm on Saturday 27 November 2010.

Examiner:

The following have been authorised by PSLSC to determine whether a Candidate has attained this Award:

  • PSLSC Head Coach (Kurt Wilson) and any delegated by the Head Coach with that authority
  • Currently active Members of the Junior Surf Coaching Team
  • PSLSC Board Members or Club Officers
  • A suitably registered and approved Swim Coach

Where an Award is recommended externally to a session operated by PSLSC, that recommendation must be made known either verbally or in writing to the PSLSC Director of Junior Surf so that Club Records can be modified accordingly.

The recommendation must outline the Candidates times in completing the requirement of the Award and that the Candidate is considered eligible to train on Knee Boards and Surf / Ski equipment within the PSLSC Junior Surf program.

Any external recommendation will be considered by the PSLSC Board (including the Director of Junior Surf) before approval is given.

An updated List of successful Candidates will be published on this Website and also made available to the Lifeguard Patrol Tower for equipment requests made outside of Junior Surf sessions.

How to advise intention to attempt Award:

Members can make their intention known to the Coach who will note the relevant names.
